Ecosystem marketplaces are increasingly being accepted as tools for improving the ecological value of restoration and mitigation projects, while lowering costs and promoting ecologically strategic investments. For land owners and managers, participation in an ecosystem marketplace can significantly increase the value of their property and provide a revenue source that is consistent with a conservation mission. For those in need of mitigation, the purchase of credits does not take the place of regulatory requirements to avoid and minimize impacts to natural resources, however, it does allow for more effective mitigation when impacts cannot be avoided.
