Structural Engineering

Parametrix
Structural engineering and design helps bridge communities and provides a viable option to move people and things.

Specific capabilities include:

Steel Bridges
Steel bridges offer a lighter structure, faster construction, and economical project costs. Our structural engineers have extensive experience with a wide range of steel bridge types, from simple span plate girders to long span arches. They have used steel to widen long span arches, replace bridges over environmentally sensitive rivers, and construct freeway interchanges over active roadways.

Concrete Bridges
Concrete bridges are cost-effective, aesthetically pleasing, and require less long-term maintenance. Parametrix’s structural engineers have designed precast prestressed girder bridges, cast in place post-tensioned box girders, and segmental box girders.

Bridge Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation projects require structural engineers with extensive experience in all of the major structure types and knowledge of the materials used in older structures and how those structures were constructed. Our engineers have experience with widened steel girder structures and arched and rehabilitated movable bridges.

Transportation Bridge Inspection & Load Rating
Parametrix’s certified bridge inspectors have extensive experience inspecting and rating loads for all of the major types of bridges. From simple concrete slab bridges, prestressed girder bridges, and steel girders to cable-stayed and suspension bridges, our structural engineers have the experience to inspect and rate loads for any bridge on an agency’s inventory.

Seismic Retrofit
Parametrix’s structural engineers were among the first in the northwest to design seismic retrofits for bridges. We have performed retrofits on flat slab, concrete box and tee girders, steel trusses and arches, and movable bridges.

Waterfront Structures
Waterfront structures are unique in that they are located in harsh coastal environment and live loads imparted by vessels are substantially greater than highway loading. Our staff has worked on the design of both fixed and floating waterfront structures.

Rail Bridges
Rail bridges are unique in that the live loads imparted by locomotives are substantially greater than that of highway loading. Like highway bridges, rail bridges are often constructed of steel, concrete, and timber. The Parametrix Bridge and Structures staff have designed numerous rail bridges.
