05.05.17 WSDOT Selects Parametrix to for First On-Call UAS Services Contract
Seattle, WA – Parametrix has been selected by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to provide on-call unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) services beginning in 2017 for a period of 2 years. This is the first time WSDOT has solicited On-Call UAS services.
Parametrix has received their Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Section 333 Exemption (Exemption No. 12308), and also has multiple pilots qualifies under FAA Section 107 which allows them to fly their UAS fleet commercially within the US airspace, on both scheduled and emergency missions. Parametrix’s UAS equipment includes one fixed wing UAS and one rotary wing UAS. The firm will be able to provide 4K camera resolution while shooting video and still imagery from the drone.
Bob Pusey, PLS will lead the Parametrix team as Project Manager. Pusey has led the growth of the UAS program at Parametrix. He has also given several presentations on his UAS knowledge, including a webinar for the Federal Highway Administration. The team also includes four FAA-certified pilots, Michael Wallitner, Dennis Frost, Griffin Harger, and Brian Coursen.
Since the early 1990s, UAS or drones, have operated on a limited basis in the national airspace. Until recently, UAS mainly supported public operations, such as military or border security operations. Recently, the cost, function, and reliability of these devices has improved to where it is now practical to consider drones as a viable tool for a wide range of disciplines. Parametrix has used drones since 2015 to map existing condition mapping, document construction progress, preconstruction conditions, physical changes over time, and to gain perspective of hard to reach places like under bridges, above landfills, over waterways, and along cliffs.
Founded in 1969, Parametrix has offices in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, and New Mexico. Parametrix is comprised of more than 400 professionals providing multi-disciplinary services in transportation, natural resources, community building, water solutions, and environmental engineering and science.
