Transforming contaminated properties

Parametrix provides multi-disciplinary solutions for site remediation and redevelopment by combining our expertise in natural resource stewardship, community planning, and civil engineering. Through collaboration with public and private partners, we restore contaminated and blighted properties into sustainable development projects. We regularly help clients seek grants and funding for these efforts and gain regulatory approvals.

Client: Portland, Oregon

The redevelopment of contaminated former industrial properties along 1.2 miles fronting the Willamette River was envisioned as the largest economic development opportunity in Portland’s history and one of the largest in the state of Oregon. Over the past several decades, there had been attempts by both public and private groups to develop portions of the property. However, the plans never materialized, largely because of real or perceived contamination issues.

Parametrix helped the Portland Development Commission to obtain EPA grant funding to assess brownfields and completed a district-wide Phase I ESA on 26 properties, Phase II ESAs on 3 properties, and a public outreach program. We then helped obtain a Cleanup Grant that supported the redevelopment of one of the properties into a neighborhood park.
