Since the early 1990s, UAVs or drones, have operated on a limited basis in the national airspace. Until recently, UAVs mainly supported public operations, such as military or border security operations. Recently, the cost, function, and reliability of these devices has come to a place where it is now practical to consider drones as a viable tool for a wide range of disciplines. Parametrix has received an FAA Section 333 Exemption and uses drones to document preconstruction conditions, to document construction progress, and to gain perspective of hard to reach places like under bridges, above landfills, over waterways, and along cliffs.

The Eastside Rail Corridor is the most significant continuous corridor on the east side of Lake Washington, connecting Renton, Bellevue, Kirkland, Woodinville, and Redmond. It has the potential to become the non-motorized spine for the eastside, connecting an extensive network of regional trails extending from Seattle to Snoqualmie. Parametrix is developing a trail master plan for the corridor including trail concepts, SEPA review, and extensive public outreach to prepare for implementation of phased construction of a shared use trail in the corridor. We used our drone to document hard to reach areas of the project site and to provide compelling pictures of the iconic historic Wilburton Trestle.
