Since the early 1990s, UAVs or drones, have operated on a limited basis in the national airspace. Until recently, UAVs mainly supported public operations, such as military or border security operations. Recently, the cost, function, and reliability of these devices has come to a place where it is now practical to consider drones as a viable tool for a wide range of disciplines. Parametrix has received an FAA Section 333 Exemption and uses drones to document preconstruction conditions, to document construction progress, and to gain perspective of hard to reach places like under bridges, above landfills, over waterways, and along cliffs.

Client: Electron Hydro

Electron Hydro has a for a late 1800s era power generation facility that incorporates large areas of land to accommodate a river intake and dam, fish ladder, 7-mile water conveyance system, two holding ponds, and a power generation building. Parametrix provided mapping services to prepare as-builts for certain elements of the entire system prior to re-initializing power generation. We used a fixed-wing UAV to collect color aerial images and also employed an infrared sensor to analyze vegetation types. Deliverables included georeferenced aerial photography, point cloud models to determine volumes of manmade pond and stockpiles, and specific site features.
