Construction Surveying

Translating plans into the built environment

Construction staking is a crucial step in the building process. Our surveyors understand construction plans and specifications, and accurately layout reference points and markers to guide construction as intended by the designer. Parametrix survey crews have performed construction staking and as-built surveys on a variety of projects ranging from simple to highly complicated construction. We are known for our creative, out-of-the-box solutions to challenges that arise in the field.

The Hood Canal Bridge Replacement project was a decade-long effort to replace aging components of the 40-year-old bridge, which is a 13,000-foot-long floating marine structure. Parametrix surveyors provided QA/QC surveying on key components of the floating structure. This included checking contractor’s layout, control calculations, and methodologies. Laser scanning was introduced to document the “knuckle”, a 10-foot diameter connection between two adjoining pontoons.

Working on the floating pontoons presented challenges which were met by using a specialized survey instrument that allowed the crews to accurately measure the pontoons in relation to one another as the columns and roadway were constructed. As the pontoons changed their position in space due to wind, waves, and tides, crews were able to maintain vertical and horizontal control, making sure that the surveys were precise.
