Since the early 1990s, UAVs or drones, have operated on a limited basis in the national airspace. Until recently, UAVs mainly supported public operations, such as military or border security operations. Recently, the cost, function, and reliability of these devices has come to a place where it is now practical to consider drones as a viable tool for a wide range of disciplines. Parametrix has received an FAA Section 333 Exemption and uses drones to document preconstruction conditions, to document construction progress, and to gain perspective of hard to reach places like under bridges, above landfills, over waterways, and along cliffs.

Client: City of Orting

A new 1.6-mile Calistoga Setback Levee protects the City of Orting from flooding, widens the Puyallup River Channel, restores natural habitat, and promotes salmon recovery. The Parametrix CM team realized that a drone would be beneficial in documenting construction and also capturing the story for the City of Orting. Parametrix used the drone to track site progress through aerial photography and videos. Specifically, the drone was used regularly to monitor weed control work in the habitat mitigation sites and was helpful in establishing the extent of work complete to determine pay quantities. It was also used as a tool to monitor the effects of construction on the turbidity during in-water work.
