This new 4-span, 630-foot-long bridge replaces a 19-span structure built in 1958. Parametrix designed the replacement bridge on the same alignment as the original structure. To maintain traffic during construction, the new bridge was built in stages. The innovative superstructure design used seven prestressed concrete deck bulb tee girders with six-inch wide shear keys between girders filled with ultra-high-performance concrete to eliminate the need for a cast-in-place deck slab. This reduced the cost of the bridge and time of construction. Integral connections at the abutments and pier diaphragms to the superstructure were used to eliminate the need for expansion joints in the bridge thus reducing overall maintenance costs for the life of the structure. The foundations consist of large diameter steel driven piles.
