Flood Control

Implementing comprehensive flood control management programs

Flooding threatens both the built and natural environments. Parametrix partners with our clients to develop comprehensive flood control and prevention strategies including watershed and land use plans, flood channel and levee improvements, stormwater management approaches, and Endangered Species Act compliance.

King County, Washington
Client: Seattle City Light and King County

The existing Tolt River channel was highly constrained by a levee system that provided major habitat constraints, and didn’t provide adequate flood protection. To help the County resolve these issues, Parametrix completed a feasibility study to evaluate setback levee and floodplain reconnection alternatives. This involved data collection and analysis on Chinook spawning and rearing habitat and field surveys to determine how best to increase the amount of habitat available. After evaluating the alternatives, we assisted the County with the design of flood control elements as well as a pedestrian trail. The project has restored natural function of the lower Tolt River enhancing fish habitat, improving flood protection in the surrounding community, and providing enhanced recreational opportunities.
