Parametrix Supports Washington State Opportunity Scholarship’s Opportunity Talks Breakfast

Courtney Purdin | 11-02-2018

"If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door" - this was the theme of the Washington State Opportunity Scholarship's Opportunity Talks Breakfast held on the morning of November 1. Washington State Opportunity Scholarship (WSOS) is focused on reducing barriers to higher education and launching young professionals into STEM careers. The organization leverages private donations with state matching funds to provide scholarships along with mentoring and networking opportunities for the scholars.

Parametrix was a proud sponsor of the event, which served as a fundraiser for WSOS. Other sponsors included Sound Transit, Microsoft, Uber, Battelle, and Fred Hutch to name a few. The event raised a total of $895,000 for the organization.

The Washington State Opportunity Scholarship funded 4,000 scholars in 2017-18, 60% of those are women, 72% are first generation college students, and 73% are students of color.

Parametrix CEO Jeff Peacock, who is on the WSOS Executive Leadership Committee and a Scholar Mentor, described the event as "tremendously inspiring." Parametrix employee-owner Emily Welter, who also serves as a Scholar Mentor, said she’s “proud of Parametrix for dedicating time and resources to developing the next generation of STEM students and especially students from diverse backgrounds.”

Other Parametrix employee-owners in attendance included Daryl Wendle and John Perlic. Parametrix Board of Directors Member John Okamoto also attended.
