Intern Spotlight: Johnathan Tran

8-04-2022

We're thrilled to have several interns joining us at Parametrix this summer! We strive to provide challenging, hands-on project experience to students entering our industry. Inspiring young professionals early in their career is critical for the future of our profession and for our purpose of restoring the health of the planet for future generations.

Meet Johnathan Tran, an intern with our Oregon Community Building team based in Portland. He is from Portland and recently graduated from Portland State University with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. He is interning at Parametrix as part of the Multiple/Civil Engineering Cooperative Program (MECOP) at Portland State University.

Why did you choose an internship at Parametrix?

Although I was not able to choose which company I was able to intern at, I was excited to hear that my first summer internship would be with Parametrix, a company that works in designing and shaping innovative ideas in our infrastructure and transportation field! I always enjoyed the concept of designing in which this was a great opportunity for me to gain some experience.

What would you like to accomplish during your internship?

As someone who has spent the majority of their time in school doing handwritten calculations to analyze structures, I hope to gain more experience in the designing aspect of engineering and expand my knowledge on the various software that are utilized by engineers. The best part of being an intern is being able to learn as much as possible while being provided with a variety of experiences and projects.

What is your ultimate career goal?

I want to become an engineer who specializes in the transportation field and make an impact on communities around me. In doing so, I want to design roadways and bikeways using innovative methods to resolve existing issues and provide a better experience for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians to travel safely and comfortably.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I like to hang out with my friends and play tennis. When stuck at home, I find hands-on building experiences to be exciting during my free time, such as putting a computer together.
