04.20.18 Gig Harbor Welcome Plaza and Lift Station Receives APWA Washington Project of the Year Award
Vancouver, WA – The City of Gig Harbor’s Welcome Plaza and Lift Station 4B project received the American Public Works Association (APWA) Washington Chapter’s Project of the Year Award in the Environmental $5 million to $25 million category. The awards recognize excellence in management and administration in successfully completing public works projects.
The awards banquet was held yesterday evening in Vancouver, WA. The banquet is held annually during the APWA Washington Chapter Spring conference. David Dinkuhn from Parametrix, Jeff Langhelm, Gig Harbor Public Works Director, Darrell Winans, Gig Harbor Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent, and Clayton Thompson of Stellar J. Construction were at the banquet to accept the award.
The new lift station improves resiliency, redundancy, and safety. The building foundation was raised above the 100-year floodplain to prevent flooding during wet weather events and extreme high tides. The team developed a unique solution for emergency upstream storage in the case of a pump failure during heavy rain events, which ultimately reduces overall pumping times and cycles, prolonging the overall pump life.
The facility is located in Skansie Brother Park and also serves as a public amenity. It features a welcome plaza and viewing deck complete with shower and laundry facilities for visiting boaters. The design includes a nod to the fishing legacy in Gig Harbor. The facility was opened to the public on May 26, 2017, ahead of schedule and nearly a quarter of a million dollars under budget.
