In summer 2023, The Mountainland Association of Governments (MAG) took action to improve road safety across Summit, Utah, and Wasatch counties. Parametrix partnered with MAG in leading a multi-firm team to complete a Safety Action Plan intended to eliminate all roadway fatalities.
The action plan is part of the Safe Streets for All program and uses the Federal Highway Administration Safe System Approach. The plan emphasizes measures to protect vulnerable road users such as people walking, cycling, and using mobility devices.
This study went beyond the federal requirements by developing materials that MAG member communities could use to implement safety improvements and acquire grant funding.
Over the past year, the team analyzed thousands of crash records across three counties using in-depth statistical methods to identify high-risk locations and prioritize safety improvements. Several communities have already received grant funding to implement these improvements, with total awards amounting to $600,000.
Public engagement was vital in creating a successful safety action plan.
The team hosted virtual and in-person meetings and surveys in addition to launching a website to keep the public informed. An interactive dashboard was created to track safety improvement over time and to communicate the region’s efforts and the outcomes.
With this safety action plan in place, the MAG communities are making strides toward safer roads.
