Bend, OR – The American Public Works Association (APWA) Oregon Chapter selected the City of Bend’s Olney Avenue improvements for the 2026 project of the year award in the transportation, $5 million to $25 million division.
This award recognizes excellence, innovation and cooperation between the managing agency, consultant, and contractor. It was presented during the APWA Oregon conference in Eugene on September 30.
Olney Avenue is a critical east-west corridor connecting Bend residents to schools, parks, trails, and businesses. It is a designated key walking and biking route and crosses both US 97 and railroad tracks.

The project replaced aging water and sewer infrastructure while making the road safer to drive, walk, bike, and roll. The final design features the city’s first curb-protected bike lanes and first retrofit protected intersection. Improvements were substantially completed in February 2026.

Parametrix partnered with the city from alternatives analysis to final design and construction. The project team included DKS Associates, JLA Public Involvement, Staheli Trenchless Consultants, NW Corrosion Engineers, Wiser Rail Engineering, Cameron McCarthy, Epic Land Solutions, K&E Excavating, and DOWL.
In 2025, the project received the Oregon Institute of Transportation Engineers project of the year award.
