Lane County Material Recovery and Anaerobic Digester GHG Benefit Analysis

Lane County needed to evaluate the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions impacts and broader sustainability benefits of CleanLane, a proposed recovery facility designed to transform organics management and reduce landfill-related emissions. The facility concept would process municipal solid waste by sorting recyclables, anaerobically digesting organic material to produce renewable natural gas, and sending the remaining material to Short Mountain Landfill with significantly reduced methane generation. Parametrix completed an analysis to assess emissions and benefits across multiple categories, including landfill emissions with and without anaerobic digestion, fugitive methane, avoided emissions from renewable natural gas substitution, construction and operations emissions, wetland loss, and recycling benefits. The analysis found that CleanLane could substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions, extend the life of the landfill, create local revenue and jobs, and support compliance with organics diversion goals while maintaining the existing curbside collection system.
