Seattle, WA – The Construction Management Association (CMAA) awarded the Port of Seattle a 2025 National Construction Achievement Award for the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Baggage Optimization Phase 2 project.

Only 15 projects nationwide received this honor. The project received the award in the Transportation: Construction value greater than $50 million category. The awards were presented on October 20 in Nashville, Tennessee, during CMAA2025. The project was previously recognized by CMAA Pacific Northwest Chapter.

The three-phase baggage optimization program improves the outbound baggage handling system at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport by replacing the aging conveyor system to meet future growth. The new baggage system will create greater flexibility by allowing outbound bags from any ticket counter to be sent to any gate.

Phase 2 of the project, completed in July 2024, involved the removal and replacement of five miles of conveyor and baggage handling systems. This included the installation of a new ticketing conveyor, an expanded security system, an upgraded sortation system, relocation of the airport vendor storage, a new conveyor maintenance shop, upgraded mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, and structural retrofits.

All construction took place within the operational airport, with each phase carefully planned to minimize disruptions to airport operations. Ultimately, a more efficient baggage handling system was delivered to the Port of Seattle ahead of schedule, within budget, and with zero claims.

Parametrix provided construction management services for the project along with KBA and Nisqually. Other project team members included BNP, Gensler, WSP, Mazzetti, and Hansel Phelps.
