Bremerton, WA – On Thursday, May 19, Kitsap Transit, stakeholders, and local lawmakers gathered to celebrate the start of construction on the new Silverdale Transit Center. The new multi-modal center will serve those traveling to and from Central Kitsap, the West Sound’s hub for healthcare, shopping, and other services. It will also allow for future transit network growth, supporting Kitsap Transit’s vision to create transportation corridors in the Silverdale Urban Growth Area.

Parametrix has been involved with this multi-phase project since October 2015, from its early stages of site selection and planning, through full design development, and now construction management services for the final phase.

The new transit center will include eight bus bays to accommodate seven 40‑foot‑long buses and one paratransit bus. For the everyday transit user, decorative paving paths and landscaping will guide riders to circulation paths, waiting areas, and areas of respite, including an edible landscape garden. A cantilevered canopy will provide continuous overhead protection for waiting riders. This project also includes a driver comfort station building, public restrooms, and two bus bays equipped with wireless charging for electric buses, the first Kitsap Transit bus facility with this feature.

The text on the presentation board reads “Silverdale Transit Center: where electric buses recharge wirelessly. Silverdale will be the first transit center in Kitsap County to feature an inductive charging system. Coils in the pavement quickly and automatically recharge battery-electric busses while they are staged and waiting for passengers to board and get off the vehicle.”

Other phases of the project include a roadway realignment, a direct access bus-only on ramp onto State Route 303, and water, sanitary sewer, illumination, and stormwater improvements.

The new transit center is slated to open to the public in fall 2023.
