Portland, OR – The Oregon Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) has selected the City of Bend’s Olney Avenue Pedestrian and Bike Improvements project as the 2025 Project of the Year.

The award was presented during the 34th Annual Bill Kloos Traffic Bowl event in Portland on November 20. Project team members, including the City of Bend, DKS, and Parametrix, accepted the award, which honors innovative projects that address challenging transportation issues and advance the profession.

Olney Avenue is a critical east-west corridor connecting Bend residents to schools, parks, trails, and businesses. It is a designated key walking and biking route and crosses both US 97 and the BNSF railroad tracks. In addition, the corridor houses essential underground utilities.
The project is the City of Bend’s first curb-protected bike lanes and retrofit protected intersection. The team developed features to serve as a model for future intersection projects, such as concrete island details and approaching vertical delineators. Currently in the final phase of construction, the project improves road safety while replacing aging water and sewer infrastructure. Parametrix led the project from alternatives analysis to final design and is supporting the second phase of construction.
Construction is expected to be complete in early 2026.
