Parametrix to Provide Engineering for Olympic Region Fish Passage Barrier Removal

Puyallup, WA – The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has awarded Parametrix a contract to provide design consultant engineering services for the removal of 22 fish passage barriers in the Olympic Region.
In March 2013, a federal court injunction was issued that requires WSDOT to remove state-owned culverts that block habitat for salmon and steelhead by 2030. WSDOT has over 1,000 culverts that apply to this injunction.
Many of the culverts were installed prior to scientists fully understanding the needs of fish. The new culverts are much larger and more resilient to changes in landscape. Removing a single barrier can improve fish access for miles.
In order to maximize the number of barriers removed in a short amount of time, WSDOT has identified 22 individual sites in the Olympic Region to be addressed in a single contract. The sites are located in five counties along six different state routes. The Parametrix team includes David Evans and Associates, HDR, and SCJ Alliance. Design will be completed to a level that enables construction to begin at the beginning of the 2021 biennium.
