Las Vegas, an international tourist destination, attracts over 40 million visitors annually. In particular, the Fremont Street Experience stands out as a bustling pedestrian mall. The sheer volume of tourists, employees, and residents navigating the area results in a complex web of pedestrian and vehicular interactions.
Parametrix assisted the City of Las Vegas in preparing and winning a $1.4 million Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) grant to implement an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-Powered Pedestrian Detection Pilot. The technology will be demonstrated at 16 intersections and one mid-block crossing near the Fremont Street Experience.
This project will:
- Install AI-powered passive pedestrian detection systems at traffic signals and rectangular rapid flashing beacon (RRFB) systems to detect pedestrians queued at and crossing in marked crosswalks
- Adjust traffic signal timings and unprotected crossing flasher durations in real time based on pedestrian volumes and speed to provide a safer crossing time window
- Install a user-adaptive traffic signal system, prioritized by pedestrian activity, to adjust traffic signal timings along intersecting streets to compensate for adjustments needed during periods of heavy pedestrian activity, or during seasonal fluctuations due to special events or holiday periods
