US 180 connects I-10 and the Silver City area and serves as a critical route supporting Southwest New Mexico’s copper mining and tourist industries. To improve safety, mobility, and regional connectivity for residents and visitors, the highway was expanded from two to four lanes along a 5-mile segment from Bayard to Hurley. This included removing an overpass, realigning the roadway over existing railroad tracks, and adding a crossing.
Parametrix partnered with NMDOT to identify and evaluate alternatives, engage with the public, conduct environmental investigations, and prepare preliminary and final design plans. The first phase of the project was funded partially by the American Rescue Plan Act. It was completed six months ahead of schedule.
