First Continuous Flow Intersection in New Mexico Opens to Public

Albuquerque, NM – The US 550/NM 528 intersection in Bernalillo, NM opened to traffic on November 10, 2021. The Continuous Flow Intersection (CFI) is the first of its kind in the state. Currently, 50,000 drivers pass through this intersection each day and that number is expected to increase.A CFI improves traffic flow and reduces delays by allowing left turns and through movements on opposite approaches to occur at the same time. Because it is the first intersection of its kind in the state, a driver education video and simulations were developed to help drivers understand how the intersection works. These videos were captured on the day the intersection opened to traffic.Parametrix worked with the New Mexico Department of Transportation to design this innovative solution and develop and implement the public engagement plan. Horrocks Engineers and Lee Engineering played key roles on our team by providing design and signal timing support. This project is part of the US 550 Corridor improvements. The corridor is a significant commuter, local, and regional roadway. The primary goals of the project are to increase capacity, improve safety, and improve conditions for pedestrians and bicyclists. Improving capacity and reducing congestion on US 550 between I-25 and NM 528 will enhance economic development potential in the Town of Bernalillo, Santa Ana Pueblo, Rio Rancho and communities in northwest New Mexico.About ParametrixParametrix is a 100-percent employee-owned firm providing inspired solutions in engineering, planning, and environmental sciences.
