Parametrix Named Northwest ESOP Company of the Year

The Northwest Chapter of the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) Association has selected Parametrix as the 2019 Company of the Year. The Northwest Chapter is made up of more than 133 ESOP companies in Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. A committee reviews applications and presents the award to “an ESOP company that demonstrates commitment to employee ownership and its success in maximizing the benefits of the ESOP, regardless of company size or maturity of the ESOP,” according to The ESOP Association. The winner is typically announced during the chapter conference but due to the COVID-19 pandemic the conference did not take place this year.“When you mention Parametrix in our industry, the word ESOP is often used in the first couple of sentences. You often hear that there is something in the water at Parametrix. We believe that special something is a culture of employee ownership,” said Parametrix’s internal ESOP Trustees in the award submittal.Through the ESOP, Parametrix has offered generous contribution margins to its employee-owners, which have resulted in retirement benefit levels averaging around 200% of the industry average over the last 10 years. Company financial data is made available to all employee-owners and each year the company holds an event to announce the share value.Parametrix has been a member of The ESOP Association since 1992 when the firm became employee owned. In 2001, they were named The ESOP Association’s National Company of the Year. Parametrix’s co-founder, Waite Dalrymple, served as the Chair of the Employee Ownership Foundation from 2003 to 2007. In 2007, he was awarded The ESOP Association’s Lifetime Service Award. It’s Time for a Change

Parametrix CEO Jeff Peacock sent the following message to employee-owners this week. We share this with our clients, partners, and communities to publicize our commitment to continuing the conversation around system racial injustices. The very public death of George Floyd has been a catalyst for a nationwide movement and affirmation that Black Lives Matter. Like you, I was deeply saddened by yet another example of a Black person whose basic human rights were violated and whose life was taken under a pretense of law enforcement. We are all now witness to the deeply engrained lack of social justice in society that continues to swell the ugly face of racism. We are all disgusted by the pervasive enabling and persistent harassment, discrimination, and violent treatment of Black people across the country. For Black people and people of color, what is happening is a daily part of life that as a person with white privilege, I may never truly understand. The nations witness to George Floyd’s death has ignited a broad and important movement that seeks to end the long history of violent treatment and police brutality. At Parametrix, we are listening, stand with you, and are committing to doing better.I strongly support those who choose to peacefully protest this tragedy and advocate for needed changes in a system that perpetrates racial injustice. The national push for change will likely take many forms. Fundamentally however, change must come as law enforcement reforms and through inclusion, founded on voter participation and voter rights. As you read this, many of those in power are trying to keep people of color from voting by systematically closing polling places in low income and minority areas and pushing to eliminate mail in voting. When we see protesters in the age of the haves and the have nots layered under the intentional encouragement of divisiveness, polarization and subversive moves aimed at keeping things the way they are, we are seeing people who have been pushed to the edge. People who simply want to be treated justly and work toward a brighter future. The window for meaningful change has burst open and the time has come to take a stand. Not just a stand for diversity, equity, and inclusion, but also a stand against the injustices of institutionalized racism.Through educating ourselves about privilege, unconscious bias, and institutional racism we will become better listeners and be able to cultivate crucial conversations within our company, and within our communities. To that end, we have placed some helpful resources on [our intranet] designed to help with awareness, understanding, and ideas for supporting our co-workers. I encourage everyone to read, watch, and share this important information.I do not pretend to have answers for the change that is needed. I am however, committed to keeping this conversation at the forefront within Parametrix. Through education, discussion, and dialog, together will we define how Parametrix will make a difference-Jeff

New Segment of Trail Connecting Lake Washington to Puget Sound Opens to Public

Photo courtesy of King County taken at the February 26 ribbon cutting.Seattle, WA – Another one-mile segment of the Lake to Sound Trail has opened in King County. This latest segment is part of the long-term King County Parks project to connect Lake Washington to Puget Sound with a 16-mile trail linking to four other regional trails and transit. Parametrix has played a role in the project since 2008 when planning began. Subconsultant HWA Geosciences, Inc. also provided significant foundation design and construction observation roles. The latest stretch of trail to open connects the City of Tukwila’s Fort Dent Park to the City of Renton’s Black River Riparian Forest via a railroad underpass and a new bridge across the Black River. The construction of the bridge included a soil drilling activity to inject a slurry of concrete into the soil and stabilized the riverbank. This allows the bridge foundation to withstand seismic events.Photo credit: Eli Brownell, King CountyOther safety features include a 160-foot long overhead fence canopy to protect trail users from debris cast down by high-speed commuter trains and a pedestrian-actuated signal (referred to as a HAWK) which allows pedestrians to safely cross a busy road. The trail adheres to King County Parks’ regional standards with 12-foot-wide trail, 2-foot-wide surface shoulders, and 1-foot-wide clear zone on each side. Trail users can expect to catch glimpses of the largest heron rookeries in the region, learn about Native American communities that once resided along the nearby shores, or bike-commute to the connecting Green River Trail.  Parametrix is working with King County Parks to design the next phase, which will connect Burien and SeaTac to Des Moines. It is scheduled to begin construction in 2021.About ParametrixParametrix is a 100-percent employee-owned firm providing inspired solutions in engineering, planning, and environmental sciences.
