06.20.19 Port of Sunnyside Receives Job Creation Award for Ostrom’s Mushroom Farm Project

Photo courtesy of Port of SunnysideSunnyside, WA – The Port of Sunnyside has been awarded the Washington Public Ports Association’s Outstanding Job Creator of the Year award for their work with Ostrom’s Mushroom Farm, the only large-scale commercial mushroom grower in Washington State. The Washington Public Port Association gives the Outstanding Job Creator Award “to a project that creates jobs for a community, with an eye on the quality of the jobs and the relative impact of the jobs created.” The award was presented to the project team at the organization’s Spring Meeting. The project is estimated to bring approximately 200 new jobs to the Yakima Valley. The Port recently received a grant and low interest rate loan for the project from the Washington State Community Economic Revitalization Board and Yakima County Supporting Investments in Economic Development. Parametrix has assisted the Port with funding applications as well as concept development and design for the project, which will reuse biogas to create renewable energy, replacing natural gas for steam boilers used in the new Ostrom’s facility. Currently, the Port treats food industry wastewater through an anaerobic digester and releases biogas through a flare unit; enough to heat 300 homes. This project will conceptually harness that energy and use it to replace natural gas and electricity, saving up to approximately 4,100 tons of greenhouse gas emissions from being released into the air each year. The biogas will be purified in a new pretreatment system on Port property and then conveyed in an underground pipeline to the new Ostrom’s Mushroom facility currently under construction approximately one mile away.
